What Does your AC Drain Line Do?
As your air conditioner cools the home, warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil. Moisture in the air condenses on the coil in much the same way water forms on the outside of a cold glass. That water drips into a drain pan and flows through a condensate drain line to a designated location outside the home. During humid weather, an AC system can remove a significant amount of moisture every day. If the drain line becomes restricted, water can back up into the drain pan or around the indoor unit. Many systems include a float switch that shuts the AC off when water rises too high. The outdoor end of a condensate drain line is often located near ground level, where it can be exposed to grass, soil, leaves, insects, and landscaping debris. Mud, insect nests, or plant material can restrict the outlet and prevent water from draining properly. Yard maintenance can also push clippings or soil against the pipe.
The drain outlet should remain visible and unobstructed. Homeowners can inspect the area periodically and remove loose debris from around the opening. Do not insert sharp tools or objects deep into the pipe. This can damage the line or push the blockage farther inside.
Poor Drain-Line Installation Can Cause Repeated Clogs

A condensate line needs the correct slope so gravity can move water toward the outlet. Low spots, sagging sections, excessive bends, or improperly connected fittings can allow water and debris to collect.

- An AC system that suddenly shuts off
